Mogwai is a Scottish post-rock band, formed in Glasgow in 1995. The band typically compose lengthy guitar-based instrumental pieces that feature dynamic contrasts, melodic bass lines, and the occasional vocal harmony. The band's sound has been compared to the styles of artists such as Pink Floyd, My Bloody Valentine, Slint, Sonic Youth, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The band were championed by John Peel from their early days. Peel famously described them as "the best band in the world" after hearing their first recording sessions in 1997. The group have released nine studio albums, with a tenth due in 2016. Mogwai's music has been used in a number of films and television programmes. Stuart Braithwaite, the band's guitarist, has scored three films: Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (2006), The Fountain (2006) and We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011). Mogwai have also contributed to several film soundtracks, including The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), The Fountain (2006) and Zachary's Story (2007). Braithwaite also composed the score for Mr. Wonka, an episode of the TV series Peep Show. The band have been nominated for three Grammy Awards, and have won two Ivor Novello Awards.
