Born in Syracuse, New York, Martin started as a street performer in Harvard Square before signing with Atlantic Records in 1992. His debut album, In the Journey, was released in 1993 and featured his hit single "Where Did I Go Wrong". Throughout the 1990s, Martin's career flourished with the release of his second album The American, and his third album Seeds. His fourth album Wonder Bar became his most successful to date; it was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Martin's sound blends elements of folk, funk, soul, rock, and blues creating an intense musical experience that has earned him critical acclaim from both fans and critics alike.
He has toured extensively across the US performing at clubs, theaters, and festivals such as Austin City Limits Music Festival and Lollapalooza. In addition to touring, Martin also produces albums for other artists including John Legend's Once Again and Keb' Mo's Just Like You.
