Hot Tuna is an American rock band formed in 1969 by Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady. The band's name derives from the nickname of their manager, Mark "Hotsack" Naftalin. Though Hot Tuna began as an electric blues band, it has evolved over the years into a more eclectic style, encompassing elements of folk, rock, country, and jazz. The band has toured continuously for over 50 years, released 17 albums, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. The band's first album, Hot Tuna, was released in 1970. The album features Kaukonen and Casady's bluesy guitar playing and is considered to be one of the band's best albums. The following year, Hot Tuna released First Pull Up, Then Pull Down, which features a more eclectic style of music. The album includes the song "Hesitation Blues", which has become one of the band's signature tunes. Hot Tuna released several more albums throughout the 1970s, including The Phosphorescent Rat (1972), Burgers (1972), and Mirage (1975). The band's 1974 live album, America's Choice, is considered to be one of their best live albums. In the late 1970s, Hot Tuna took a break from recording and touring as Kaukonen and Casady pursued solo careers. The band reunited in 1983 and released the album Final Vinyl. The album features a more country-influenced sound and includes the song "Midnight Moonlight", which was later covered by Grateful Dead. Hot Tuna continued to release albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Live in Japan (1985), Ain't in No Hurry (1995), and Live at Sweetwater (1997).
