The group, which formed in Los Angeles in 1965, began as a garage band with its members playing instruments such as guitars and drums. The band members were all teenagers, and they had difficulty getting gigs at first. However, they eventually caught the attention of Liberty Records, which signed them to a record deal.
Their first single, "A Walkin' Miracle," was released in December 1964 and reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group's next single, "This Diamond Ring," was released in February 1965 and reached number one on the Hot 100. The song also reached number one on the Cash Box chart and became a million-seller. The band followed up with several more hits, including "Count Me In," "Save Your Heart for Me," and "She's Just My Style."
Gary Lewis & the Playboys continued to tour and release records throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The band's popularity began to decline in the late 1960s, but they remained a popular live act. In the early 1980s, Gary Lewis decided to focus on his solo career, and the group disbanded. However, they reunited for a series of tours in the 1990s and 2000s.
Gary Lewis & the Playboys were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2014, Gary Lewis was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
