About Father John Misty

Father John Misty is an American singer-songwriter and musician from Rockville, Maryland. His original stage name was J. Tillman. He is best known for his work as the frontman of the indie folk band Fleet Foxes. Misty released his debut solo album, Fear Fun, in 2012 to critical acclaim. His second album, I Love You, Honeybear, was released in 2015 to similar acclaim. Misty's music is characterized by its use of irony, wit, and dark humor. His lyrics often address topics such as love, sex, religion, and death. Misty has been compared to artists such as Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. Father John Misty was born Josh Tillman on August 3, 1981, in Rockville, Maryland. He grew up in a Christian household and was homeschooled for much of his childhood. Misty's parents were both music teachers. His father played the guitar and his mother played the piano. Misty began playing the drums when he was eight years old. He has a video for Kiss Me (I Loved You).

He later learned to play the guitar and the bass. Misty's interest in music was initially inspired by his older brother, who played in a local punk rock band. He began writing his songs when he was 16 years old. Misty moved to Seattle, Washington, after graduating from high school. He attended community college for a brief time before dropping out. He then began working various odd jobs, including as a janitor and a pizza delivery driver. Misty also worked as a taxi driver and a dishwasher before landing a job as a concierge at a hotel. It was during this time that he began performing his songs at local clubs and cafes. In 2006, Misty befriended the members of the indie rock band Fleet Foxes. He soon began performing with them as a drummer and backing vocalist. Fleet Foxes released their self-titled debut album in 2008 to critical acclaim. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. He has written music for Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Post Malone, and Kid Cudi.

Misty appeared on the band's follow-up album, Helplessness Blues (2011), which was also nominated for a Grammy Award. In early 2012, Misty left Fleet Foxes to pursue a solo career. He released his debut solo album, Fear Fun, that same year. The album received rave reviews from critics and peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200. Misty's second album, I Love You, Honeybear, was released in 2015 to similar acclaim. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Father John Misty has released three studio albums, Fear Fun (2012), I Love You, Honeybear (2015), and Pure Comedy (2017). He has also released an EP, The Motherload (2014), and a live album, Live at Third Man Records (2016). Misty's fourth studio album is scheduled for release in 2020. Concert venues: Brighton Dome, Portsmouth Guildhall Main Auditorium, Majestic Theatre Detroit, MI, Salle Pleyel Paris.
