Ezra Furman is an American musician and songwriter. He currently resides in Chicago and tours internationally.
Furman grew up in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. His family is Jewish. He attended and graduated from Maynard High School in 2003. He then attended Tufts University, where he studied English and Psychology. After university, he briefly lived in New York City before moving to Chicago in 2006.
Furman began his musical career in 2006, self-releasing his first album, Sunnyland. He has since released nine more albums, most recently Transangelic Exodus in 2018. His music has been described as "a unique blend of punk rock, folk, and pop" and his lyrics often deal with themes of sexuality, mental health, and gender dysphoria.
Furman has been open about his mental health struggles, including bipolar disorder and anxiety. In 2015, he wrote an essay for Vice entitled "I Am Not Okay: Living with Mental Illness" in which he detailed his experiences with mental illness and the importance of seeking help.
In addition to his solo work, Furman has also been a member of several bands, including The Violents and The Swamp Gospel. He has toured with numerous artists, including Jeff Tweedy, Cat Power, and Eleanor Friedberger.
