Dinosaur Jr. is an American rock band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1984. The band currently consists of founding members J Mascis (guitar, vocals, principal songwriter) and Lou Barlow (bass guitar, vocals), as well as drummer Murph. Mascis's distortion-heavy guitar playing and drawling, baritone vocals influenced a number of alternative rock bands of the 1990s and 2000s.
Dinosaur Jr. rose to prominence with their second album, You're Living All Over Me (1987), which was highly influential on American college radio and features the band's signature song, "Freak Scene". Their third album, Bug (1988), reached the top 40 of the Billboard 200 and is cited as an influence by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Following the departure of Barlow in 1989, the band recruited bassist Mike Johnson and released two further albums, Green Mind (1991) and Where You Been (1993), before going on hiatus in 1997. In 2005, the original lineup reunited and embarked on a successful reunion tour. Mascis has said Dinosaur Jr. "reinvented the word 'indie rock'".
The band was originally formed under the name Dinosaur in 1984, with Mascis on drums, Barlow on bass guitar and vocals, and Charlie Nakajima on guitar. The band spent several months rehearsing before they recorded their first demo tape in early 1985, which they sent to various record labels but did not receive any responses. In the autumn of 1985, Mascis placed an advertisement in a Boston rock zine looking for a drummer to replace Nakajima; Murph, who was living in Amherst at the time, answered the ad and auditioned. The band played their first live show in May 1986, and subsequently began touring the East Coast of the United States.
In December 1986, the band recorded their second demo tape, which included the song "Repulsion", which was later released on the compilation album The Best of Dinosaur Jr. (1993). Mascis and Barlow made a decision to leave both Nakajima and Murph out of the band, and recruited drummer Emmett Jefferson "Pat" Murphy from the band Blister. Dinosaur Jr. became a three-piece power trio with Mascis as the principal songwriter and lead singer, Barlow on bass and backing vocals, and Murphy on drums.
In April 1987, the band recorded their first album for SST Records, You're Living All Over Me, with Albini engineering. The album was released in December 1987 to critical acclaim, but did not enter the Billboard 200 chart.
The band's second album, Bug, was recorded in May 1988 with Mark Kramer and released in October 1988. The album featured the lead single "Freak Scene", which became the band's first song to enter the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, peaking at number 19.
The band's third album, Green Mind, was recorded in December 1990 with producer Paul Kolderie and released in February 1991. The album peaked at number 28 on the Billboard 200, making it the band's highest-charting album at the time.
The band's fourth album, Where You Been, was recorded in April 1992 with Kolderie and released in May 1993. The album peaked at number 24 on the Billboard 200, making it the band's second-highest-charting album.
In 1995, Dinosaur Jr. disbanded due to creative differences between Mascis and Barlow. Mascis went on to form the band J Mascis + The Fog, while Barlow formed the folk rock band Sebadoh.
In 2005, Dinosaur Jr. reunited for a reunion tour, which was followed by the release of the live album Live at CBGB's. The band's ninth studio album, I Bet on Sky, was released in September 2012.
Dinosaur Jr. has been cited as an influence by a number of artists, including Kurt Cobain, who called Mascis his "guitar hero". Cobain once said that "Dinosaur Jr. is the best band in the world", and Mascis has said that Dinosaur Jr. "reinvented the word 'indie rock'".
