Dead Can Dance is an Australian musical project formed in 1981 by Lisa Gerrard and Brendon Perry. The band relocated to London, England, in May 1982, where it became one of the pioneering groups of the 4AD label. Its music incorporates elements of several Western musical styles including folk, medieval, Renaissance, Oriental, and permutations thereof. Dead Can Dance achieved international attention and popularity with the release of their fourth album, Into the Labyrinth (1993). Initially, Gerrard and Perry worked as a duo, but they later expanded Dead Can Dance to include other performers. Over the band's career, it has undergone numerous changes in personnel; even so, most of its work has been created by Gerrard and Perry, with occasional contributions from other musicians. In 1985, Dead Can Dance signed a new recording contract with 4AD, which resulted in the album Spleen and Ideal (1985). The album marked a change in the band's sound, with the addition of instrumentation and male/female vocals.
