About Deacon Blue

Since its formation in 1985, the Scottish pop-rock band Deacon Blue has become renowned for its melodic music and iconic style. They've gained a loyal fan base over the years, due to their unique sound and genuine musical ability. In this article, we'll take a look back at Deacon Blue's history, from its beginnings up to the present day. The band was formed by lead singer Ricky Ross, bass player Dougie Vipond, and drummer Graeme Kelling in 1985. After two debut singles were released in 1987, they released their first album "Raintown" in 1988 - this went on to become one of the most successful albums of the '80s and is remembered fondly by many of their fans today. The album spawned five UK charting singles; “Dignity”, “Loaded”, “Real Gone Kid”, “Chocolate Girl” and “Wages Day". Following the success of Raintown came their second album "When The World Knows Your Name", which included some of their more popular hits such as "Twist And Shout" and "Fergus Sings The Blues". The band went on to tour extensively throughout Europe during this period and also appeared at various UK festivals such as Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds Festivals.

In 1991, they released their third studio album "Fellow Hoodlums" which spawned several top 20 hits including «Love And Regret» as well as two top 10 hits with «Your Town» and «Queen Of The New Year». The album was met with commercial success but did not match that of its predecessor Raintown. Throughout the early 90s, Deacon Blue continued to perform live Deacon Blue concerts around Europe but began taking longer breaks between releases. They eventually returned in 1994 with a new album titled 'Whatever You Say, Say Nothing'. This marked a distinct change in direction for the band as it incorporated more folk-influenced lyrics combined with an emotive song structure which paved the way for further exploration from later albums like 'Walking Back Home' (2003) and 'The Hipsters (2008). Whilst primarily known for their recordings, Deacon Blue have made plenty of appearances at award ceremonies throughout the years; most notably winning four Brit Awards between 1988– and 1993; Best British Group (1988), Best British Album (1989), Best British Single (1989) & Critics' Choice Award (1993).

One notable moment was when awards presenter Barry White famously introduced them as "Deekah Bloooh!" instead of Deacon Blue before they collected their award! In 2006 they embarked on an extensive tour across Europe entitled "Priority Ticket Tour"; playing some of their Deacon Blue greatest hits spanning a decade-long career such as 'Dignity', 'Real Gone Kid' and 'Fergus Sings The Blues'. Deacon Blue's tour schedule takes them around Europe once again with dates still left for 2020! Overall, Deacon Blue has had an incredible career to date with no signs of slowing down anytime soon; producing hit after hit whilst gaining loyal followers along the way; this could even see them surpass into legendary status sometime soon!

Deacon Blue's songs are written by Ricky Ross Deacon Blue either on his own or in collaboration with musicians from his close circle. In Nashville, a few years back, a songwriter performed live and the performance was so impressive that it felt like destined to collaborate with artists in the future. Ross, who started the band in the mid-1980s, used to not think about his songwriting process at all. Now, he asks himself if they have already done a particular thing before and if they are repeating themselves. The sublime vocal interplay between Ross and his wife Lorraine McIntosh often creates a romantic atmosphere in Deacon Blue's music. The band's songs send a message that encourages people to communicate their thoughts to others promptly to avoid any regret later. To Ross, when Philp incorporated guitar lines into James Prime's organ work, it gave the music a particular vibe that they enjoyed. This is the kind of music that they are passionate about.
