Daryl Hall and John Oates are an American pop-rock duo formed in Philadelphia in 1970. They are blue-eyed soul veterans. While honing his craft at Temple University, Daryl Hall began pursuing a career in music. The duo's greatest hits include "Rich Girl", "Kiss on My List", "You Make My Dreams", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "Out of Touch". They worked with producers Arif Mardin and Todd Rundgren. They have sold an estimated 40 million records throughout their career, making them the best-selling music duo of all time. In total, they had 34 chart hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, seven of which went to number one. The duo met in 1970 at Albert Einstein High School in Philadelphia. They began playing together while performing in regional theatre productions and soon began writing original material.
Tommy Mottola quickly became their manager and in 1972, they signed up with Atlantic Records and released their debut album, Whole Oates. The album failed to chart, but the duo's popularity increased with their next release, Abandoned Luncheonette (1973) and War Babies (1974). The duo achieved their breakthrough in 1976 with the release of their self-titled album, which peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 chart and yielded the hit singles "Sara Smile" and "She's Gone". The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Hall and Oates' next album, Bigger Than Both of Us (1976), was their first to reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It spawned the Top 40 hits "Rich Girl" and "Back Together Again", and went platinum. In 1980, the duo released their sixth album, Voices, which reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified double platinum by the RIAA.
The album's hit single, "Kiss on My List", topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Private Eyes (1981) was another top-ten hit album, reaching number seven on the Billboard 200 and being certified triple platinum by the RIAA. It spawned four singles, including the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit "Private Eyes". The duo's next album, H2O (1982), reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA. Their studio albums spawned three singles, including the top-ten hit "Maneater". No wonder they've got great fan reviews! In 1983, the duo released their first greatest hits album, Rock 'n Soul Part 1, which topped the Billboard 200 chart and was certified six times platinum by the RIAA. It featured the new single "Say It Isn't So", which peaked at number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 1984, the duo released their eighth album, Big Bam Boom. The album reached number three on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It spawned four singles, including the top-ten hit "Out of Touch". In 1986, the duo released their ninth and final studio album, Ooh Yeah! The album reached number eight on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It spawned three singles, including the top-ten hit "Method of Modern Love". The duo released a second greatest hits album in 1991, entitled Very Best of Daryl Hall & John Oates. The album reached number four on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified eight times platinum by the RIAA. It featured the new single "So Close", which peaked at number 18 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
