Dark Star Orchestra is a Grateful Dead cover band formed in Chicago, Illinois. The name of the band was the idea of their guitarist John Kadlecik and keyboardist Scott Larned. DSO is known for its performances of the complete, original set lists from Grateful Dead tribute band concerts. Dark Star Orchestra performs show-for-show recreations (musically and visually) of historic Grateful Dead Covers. Dark Star Orchestra puts aside a portion of its concerts to pay tribute to the music of the Jerry Garcia Band. Since that time, the future of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann's band post-Grateful Dead careers was still uncertain. Formed in 1997, the band continues to perform sold-out shows throughout the United States at both large stadiums and more intimate venues.
The band has performed over 2,500 shows and counting. Dark Star Orchestra was voted Favorite Jam Band in the 2005 Relix Magazine Readers Poll and won the Jammy Award for Tour of the Year in 2006.
