The Chameleons were created in Middleton, England, in 1981 by Mark Burgess, Reg Smithies, and Dave Fielding. Influenced by Joy Division and The Cure, their sound combined ambient guitar work with introspective lyrics. Early releases, like as the Tony Fletcher Sessions (1982), established a cult following. The band's name emphasized their versatility and multiple musical textures, which became a defining feature of their post-punk image.

Their debut album, Script of the Bridge (1983), received critical acclaim and helped them establish a presence on the UK charts. Tours in Europe and North America followed, including appearances at legendary locations such as CBGB. Subsequent albums What Does Anything Mean? Basically (1985) and Strange Times (1986) broadened their appeal. They worked with producers Hugh Jones and Dave Allen, influencing the next wave of alternative and indie rock musicians.

Chameleons reunited in 2023 to play remastered classics and fan favorites. Shows feature ambient video projections, prolonged guitar solos, and close audience participation. Their 2024 tour will visit Manchester, London, and New York.
