Billy Joel is a singer-songwriter born on May 9, 1949, in the Bronx, New York. He is one of the most respected and best-selling recording artists. His father, Howard (1911-1982), was a classical pianist, and his mother, Rosalind (née Nyman; 1918-2010), was an English-born Jew who had emigrated to America at the age of six. Joel's paternal grandfather, Karl Amson Joel (1882-1957), was a German Jewish immigrant who emigrated to the United States in 1932. He has two younger brothers, Alexander Joel, and Anthony Joel. Joel's music career began in 1964 when he started playing piano in local nightclubs. In 1965, he joined the Echoes, a band that played Top 40 hits. The Echoes changed their name to the Starlight Vocal Band and released a single, "She's Got a Way," in 1965. The song failed to chart but was later included on Joel's first solo album, Cold Spring Harbor (1971). In 1967, he joined the rock group the Hassles. The band released two albums, The Hassles (1967) and Hour of the Wolf (1968), before disbanding in 1969. He began recording solo albums in 1971. His first album, Cold Spring Harbor, was released in 1971 and failed to chart. His second album, Piano Man (1973), was his breakthrough album. The album's title track, "Piano Man," became his first major hit and helped the album reach number 27 on the Billboard 200 chart. In 1974, he released his third album, Streetlife Serenade. The album reached number 35 on the Billboard 200 chart. His fourth album, Turnstiles (1976), was his first album to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album reached number 23 on the Billboard 200 chart. His fifth album, The Stranger (1977), was his breakthrough album in the United States. The album reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the RIAA. The album's lead single, "Just the Way You Are," won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. His sixth album, 52nd Street (1978), was his first album to be certified diamond by the RIAA. The album reached number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and became the first album to be certified platinum by the RIAA. 52nd Street won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. His seventh album, Glass Houses (1980), reached number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the RIAA. The album's lead single, "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His eighth album, The Nylon Curtain (1982), reached number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the RIAA. The album's lead single, "Allentown," reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He has released 13 albums throughout his career, and some of his most popular tracks are "Piano Man," "My Life," "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "We Didn't Start the Fire," "Uptown Girl" and "The River of Dreams."
