Algernon Cadwallader is an American emo and math rock band from Yardley, Pennsylvania. The band rose to prominence in the early 2010s with their unique blend of emotionally charged lyrics and complex mathematics-inspired guitar work. The band's name is derived from the protagonist of the novel Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. In high school, Peter Helmis, Joe Reinhart, and Colin Mahony collaborated with their friend TJ DeBlois to form the forerunner of Algernon Cadwallader, Halfway to Holland (drummer of metalcore band A Life Once Lost.) Helmis and Reinhart played guitars, Mahony played bass, and Helmis sang as well. The band released their debut album, Some Kind of Cadwallader in 2008. Critics praised the record for its unique sound and creative songwriting. The latter record saw the addition of drummer Chris Tancredi and vocalist/guitarist Nick Tapper, who had been friends with Helmis since middle school. In contrast to the clear math rock riffs that Algernon Cadwallader is known for, Halfway to Holland had a stronger driving sound, more guitar reverb, and chords that rounded out the rhythm. Despite the band's brief existence, it nonetheless enjoys a cult following today. While Mahony and Reinhart started a new band called Like Lions with classmates from their school, Helmis went on to perform in a number of solo and duet acts. Due to stylistic disagreements, Reinhart and Mahony's partnership with Like Lions was short-lived. As a result, they contacted Helmis and buddy Nick Tazza (from Ape Up!) to join Algernon Cadwallader in 2005. The lineup was altered, with Mahony now playing rhythm guitar and Helmis still singing. In contrast to their prior work, the 2006 release "Demo" featured five songs and was heavily influenced by the math-rock and Midwest emo genres. However, instead of the deeper, more gloomy tones the emo genre had been renowned for, the lyrical substance was a more uplifting, joyful reflection of personal experiences or everyday life. They released Some Kind Of Cadwallader, their debut full-length album, in 2008. Up until this moment, performances had mostly taken place in Philadelphia basements and houses, with brief excursions to nearby cities. Tazza departed the band at the beginning of 2008, and Matt "Tank" Bergman (US Funk Team) took over. Mahony quit the band later that year, and Algernon decided not to replace Mahony. The band, which now consists of all former members, had a reunion tour in North America last June 1, 2022. The reunited band has been working hard in their home studios for their brand new album. They have promised to bring the same heartfelt, energetic melodies that made them popular in the past while incorporating a wider range of musical styles and sounds.
