Al Stewart is a Scottish singer-songwriter and folk-rock musician who rose to fame in the 1970s. He has been acclaimed for his unique blend of folk, rock, classical, jazz, and world music. His songwriting is often considered witty and literate and his lyrics often focus on historical events or people. Al Stewart's career began in 1966 when he released his first single "The Elf" under the name Alastair Ian Stewart. In 1967, he signed with CBS Records and released the album Bedsitter Images that same year. It was met with critical acclaim and established him as an artist on the British folk scene. In 1975, Al Stewart released his breakthrough album Year of the Cat which featured some of his most famous songs including "On The Border," "Midas Shadow," and the title track "Year of The Cat." This record was a commercial success reaching number five on the UK Albums Chart and number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart. It also earned him two Grammy nominations for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Male Artist and Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s).
Throughout his career, Al Stewart has released over 20 albums including Time Passages (1978), 24 Carrots (1980), Last Days Of The Century (1988), and Sparks Of Ancient Light (2008).
