Formed in 2004, The Movement is a revered reggae band from Colombia that has since become a hugely successful worldwide act. Led by vocalist and producer Jose Estrada, the six-piece band has released five studio albums, won multiple awards, and gone on two international tours during their 15-year career. Let’s take a look back at the history of this pioneering group and explore why they have remained so influential in the world of reggae music. The Movement’s journey began with their self-titled album in 2004 which established them as one of Latin America's foremost reggae bands while introducing fans to their signature sound - a mix of roots, dancehall, and hip-hop influences. Their second album, On Your Feet!, was even more successful as it peaked at number eight on Billboard's World Album chart.
The success sustained with each subsequent release - Fugitivo (2009), Counter Attack! (2013), and Rip It up (2017). This last album was especially acclaimed for its production by David “Teflon” Hidalgo who incorporated elements from traditional Afro-Colombian music into the mix. Each project was accompanied by regional tours that promoted songs from upcoming releases as well as classic tracks like "Problems" or "Behind My Guitar". Throughout their career, The Movement has achieved numerous accolades that attest to their creative power and fanbase loyalty. Not only were they deemed "Best Reggae Band" four times at Colombian Music Awards between 2005 - 2011 but they also won "Best International Reggae Group" at Grammy Latino 2006 after being nominated twice before! Meanwhile, their songs held top spots in both Latin American airplay charts and Spotify Playlists around the world including an appearance on President Obama's official Whitehouse Playlist in 2010 with ‘Take Flight’ taken from On Your Feet.
As well as performing at festivals such as Glastonbury (2012) & Lollapalooza (2016), The Movement went on two lengthy world tours between 2014 - 2015 to further build upon their devoted fan base. During these dates across Europe, Asia & Australia over 200+ concerts were played spanning some of the most far-flung regions like India where sold-out halls greeted them warmly. Tagging along for the ride were various DJs such as Diplo who performed prior to the live show or joined the band onstage for special guest appearances throughout! To sum it all up, The Movement is undoubtedly one of reggae's biggest names whose story will continue to be written & retold through generations within & outside Latin America. To quote Jose Estrada himself; “It doesn't matter if you're black or white or speak Spanish or English...we play reggae because we love it and want others to experience what we've lived through over the years."
