Machel Montano HD (born October 22, 1974) is a Trinidadian soca singer, record producer, actor and songwriter. Montano has been credited with spearheading the modern soca movement. He is a nine-time Grammy Award nominee, three-time winner of the International Soca Monarch and Road March King of Trinidad and Tobago, and is the inventor of the "bounce" subgenre of soca music. During his childhood, Montano attended Queen's Royal College in Port of Spain. As a teenager, he formed the Xtatik band with friends and fellow Queen's Royal College students Carlton Mangroo, Neil Iwer George and Aldwyn Roberts (better known as Lord Kitchener). The band's first album, tooXtreme, was released in 1992.
In 1993, Montano won the Caribbean Song Festival with the song "Too Young to Soca". The following year, he released his second album, Madness, which received a positive reception from soca music fans. In 1995, Montano and Xtatik released their third album, T.O.K., which featured the hit single "Outrageous". The album's success helped to make Montano one of the most popular soca artists in Trinidad and Tobago. In 1998, Montano released his fourth album, Machel Montano HD. The album's title refers to the high-definition quality of the album's tracks. The album featured the hit single "Jumbie", which helped to popularize the soca subgenre known as "bounce". In 2001, Montano and Xtatik released their fifth album, Ultimate Rejection. The album featured the hit single "No Lie", which became a popular anthem for Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival celebrations. In 2003, Montano released his sixth album, Epic. The album was a critical and commercial success, and helped to cement Montano's reputation as one of the leading soca artists of his generation. In 2006, Montano released his seventh album, The Process. The album featured the hit single "Lose Yourself", which became an anthem for Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival celebrations. In 2010, Montano released his eighth album, Stage One. The album was a critical and commercial success, and helped to cement Montano's reputation as one of the leading soca artists of his generation. In 2014, Montano released his ninth album, MM7. The album was a critical and commercial success, and helped to cement Montano's reputation as one of the leading soca artists of his generation.
