About The Temptations

The Temptations are an American vocal group that released a series of successful singles and albums with Motown Records during the 1960s and 1970s. The group's repertoire has included, at various times during its five-decade history, R&B, doo-wop, soul, psychedelia, funk, disco, pop, rock, and adult contemporary. The Temptations were founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1960 by Otis Williams, Elbridge "Al" Bryant, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, and Paul Williams (no relation to Otis). The group's first hit single, "The Way You Do the Things You Do", was released in 1964. The quintet's success continued with a series of hit singles, including "My Girl" (1965), "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" (1966), and "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" (1966). By the early 1970s, the Temptations had become one of the most successful groups in pop music history. They had achieved mainstream popularity with their live show, which featured choreographed dance routines and flashy wardrobes.

The group's success continued with a series of hit singles, including "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" (1972), which won them a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The Temptations were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. Four of the group's members (Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, and Paul Williams) have been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Temptations are one of the best-selling groups of all time, with estimated sales of over 100 million records. The group's origins lie in the doo-wop singing style popularized by groups such as the Ink Spots and the Orioles in the 1940s and 1950s. Williams, Bryant, Kendricks, and Paul Williams began singing together in high school; they were later joined by Franklin, who sang bass. The quintet signed with Motown Records in 1961 and released their first single, "The Way You Do the Things You Do", in 1964. Two of their most popular hits are the iconic "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" and the classic "Reach Out I'll Be There."

Before the emergence of One Direction, NSYNC, and Backstreet Boys, The Temptations held unrivaled supremacy in the realm of boy bands. "Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations" chronicles the journey of the five original individuals who created mesmerizing melodies, as they embark on a remarkable road trip from Detroit to the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Tony-nominated musical showcases captivating Temptations tunes such as "My Girl," "Just My Imagination," "Get Ready," and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." The show will be showcased at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center starting in June 2023. Michael Andreaus portrays Otis Williams, the esteemed leader and sole surviving member of the group's original lineup. Before the show, we had the opportunity to catch up with him.
