About The Dramatics

The Dramatics is an American R&B group, formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1962. The group's first hit, "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1971. The Dramatics were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003. The Dramatics began as a vocal group called The Teenagers in 1962. The original members were: William "Wee Gee" Howard (first tenor), Ron Banks (second tenor), Elbert Wilkins (baritone), and Lawrence Payton (bass). The group's first recording was a single for the local record label, MoTown Records, called "All Because of You". The Teenagers auditioned for Motown's Berry Gordy, but he was not interested in signing them. Gordy suggested that they change their name to "The Dramatics". The group agreed and signed with Motown in 1963. In 1967, the Dramatics had their first hit with "I'll Make It Up to You", which peaked at number 28 on the R&B chart. The group's first album, What You See Is What You Get, was released in 1969. The album's title track was a hit, peaking at number 18 on the R&B chart. The group's next album, A Dramatic Experience, was released in 1971. The lead single, "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", was a number-one hit on the R&B chart and peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The group's third album, Dramatically Yours, was released in 1972. The lead single, "In the Rain", peaked at number five on the R&B chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was certified gold by the RIAA. The group's fourth album, Thankful for Your Love, was released in 1974. The lead single, "Hey You! Get Off My Mountain", peaked at number 18 on the R&B chart. The group's fifth album, A Dramatic Turn of Events, was released in 1975. The lead single, "Stop Your Weeping", peaked at number 24 on the R&B chart. The group's sixth album, Joy Ride, was released in 1977. The lead single, "Falling in Love Again", peaked at number 21 on the R&B chart.
