The Capris are an American doo-wop group, best known for their hit single, “There’s a Moon Out Tonight.” The Capris began their career singing at local dances and clubs in and around the Bronx. In 1958, they recorded their first single, “God Only Knows,” which was released on the small Teen label. The record was a minor regional hit, but it did not gain national attention. The group continued to perform and record throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, but with little success.
In 1962, they recorded a new version of “There’s a Moon Out Tonight,” which had originally been recorded by the Elegants in 1958. The Capris’ version of the song became a huge hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group followed up with a string of other hits. The Capris disbanded in 1967, but reunited briefly in the 1970s and again in the 1990s. They continue to perform periodically, and their classic hits are still heard on oldies radio stations across the United States.
