Michael Samuel Kiwanuka is a British singer-songwriter and record producer who is signed with Polydor Records. His second album, Love & Hate, debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart in 2016. In October 2018, he won the Mercury Prize for his third album, Kiwanuka. Early life and education. Michael Kiwanuka was born on 3 May 1987 in Muswell Hill, north London, to Ugandan parents who had fled Idi Amin's regime in the 1970s. His father, Anthony Kiwanuka, is a mechanic and his mother, Jacqueline Kiwanuka, is a hairdresser. He has two brothers and a sister. As a child, he listened to his parents' records by James Brown and Otis Redding, as well as Ugandan, Congolese, and Ghanaian music. Kiwanuka attended Fortismere School in Muswell Hill. He began playing guitar at the age of 15. At school, he was a member of the choir and drama club. He cites Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, John Martyn, Mumford & Sons, and TV on the Radio as his musical influences. After graduating from school, Kiwanuka studied music at the School of Audio Engineering (SAE) in London.
He then worked as a session musician and producer, working with artists such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Laura Mvula, and Amy Winehouse. Kiwanuka's debut album, Home Again, was released in 2012. The album was produced by Paul Butler of The Bees. It peaked at number 4 on the UK Albums Chart and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. In 2016, Kiwanuka released his second album, Love & Hate. The album was produced by Danger Mouse and Inflo. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. In October 2018, Kiwanuka won the Mercury Prize for his third album, Kiwanuka.
