The son of a Haitian mother and a Puerto Rican father, he was born Gerald Maxwell Rivera in Brooklyn, New York. His mother was raised in a devout Baptist family in Haiti. He sang in his church's choir but didn't take music seriously until he was around 17 years old, after receiving a Casio keyboard as a gift from a friend. He began composing songs after being given a Casio keyboard by a friend. Along with renowned artists D'Angelo and Erykah Badu, Maxwell is credited as a founder of "neo-soul," the genre that became widely popular in the late 1990s. In 1991, singer Tina Moore discovered Maxwell while he was singing at a school event in New York City. His debut album, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, was released in 1996 to considerable acclaim. The record went to number one on the Billboard 200 and was double-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album debuted at number one in the United States. His follow-up, Embrya, arrived in 1998 and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart.
The RIAA certified it platinum. Now was released in 2001, and BLACKsummers'night in 2009. BLACKsummers'night was nominated for six Grammy Awards (winning two), including Song of the Year for "Pretty Wings." In 2016, Maxwell released his fifth studio album blackSUMMERS'night. He has won three Grammy Awards out of 13 nominations, six Soul Train Music Awards, and two NAACP Image Awards. In 2019, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and the Congressional Black Caucus presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award for "his innovative contributions to the music industry as a soul singer, songwriter, and producer." For over two decades, Maxwell has held the undivided attention of music fanatics with his five chart-topping studio albums which he released at his own pace. Each one is now considered a timeless classic. His R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart was a major success, earning him a Grammy Nomination for Best R&B Album. It even earned prestigious accolades from Rolling Stone, Time, and USA Today as one of the year's top albums!
