Ledisi was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She grew up singing in the church choir and listening to her mother's records by artists like Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, and Patti LaBelle. As a teenager, she was a part of an R&B group called UNI (Unique N' Intelligent). The group toured locally and recorded a few demos, but they eventually disbanded. After high school, Ledisi attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She majored in music business and sang in the school's renowned vocal ensemble, The Southern University Jubilee Singers. After graduation, she moved to San Francisco and began working on her solo career. In the early 2000s, Ledisi released two independent albums, "Soulsinger" and "Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue." These albums caught the attention of Verve Records, who signed her in 2007. Ledisi's major label debut album, "Lost & Found," was released later that year. The album featured the hit single "In the Morning," which helped Ledisi gain a wider audience. Ledisi has released six studio albums in total, including the Grammy-nominated "Turn Me Loose" and "The Truth."
