Donell Jones was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. He began his music career as a teenager, writing songs for local artists and producing his own demos. In 1996, he caught the attention of LaFace Records co-founder L.A. Reid, who signed him to the label. Jones' debut album My Heart, was released in June 1996. The album's first single, "In the Hood", peaked at number sixty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and was followed by the Top 40 hit "U Know What's Up". Jones' second album, Where I Wanna Be, was released in October 1999 and featured the number-one hit "Have You Seen Her". The album's second single, "Shorty (Got Her Eyes on Me)", peaked at number forty-one on the Hot 100. Jones' third album, Life Goes On, was released in December 2001 and featured the Top 40 hit "You Know That I Love You". The album's second single, "Better Start Talking", peaked at number thirty-nine on the Hot 100. Jones' fourth album, Journey of a Gemini, was released in May 2006 and featured the Top 40 hit "Knockin'". The album's second single, "You Should Know", peaked at number thirty-eight on the Hot 100. Jones' fifth album, Lyrics, was released in October 2010 and featured the single "Don't Wake Me Up". Jones' sixth album, Forever, was released in October 2015 and featured the single "Special Girl". Jones has sold a million records worldwide. He has collaborated with a number of other artists, including Ashanti, Jermaine Dupri, LL Cool J, and Snoop Dogg.
