The Dazz Band is an American R&B/funk band most popular in the early 1980s. They are best known for their 1982 Grammy Award-winning single, "Let It Whip". The band was formed in 1976 in Cleveland, Ohio.
The band's first album, Keepin' the Funk Alive!, was released in 1980 on the Motown label. The album's first single, "I'll Always Love You", reached number twenty-six on the Billboard R&B chart. The album's second single, "Foot Stompin' Music", reached number twelve on the R&B chart and number forty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100.
Bobby Harris and the Dazz Band received the Key to the City and proclamations from the State of Ohio on December 31, 1982, during the Dazz Band's New Year's Eve performance at the Front Row Theatre in Cleveland.
Many traditional funk/R&B/soul acts in the US started touring abroad when rap was incorporated into American music. In order to revive funk in America, Harris enlisted the help of businessman Bo Boviard, longtime friend and bandmate Marlon McClain, and members of the Bar-Kays, Con Funk Shun, Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band, the S.O.S. Band, and the Dazz Band for a project dubbed "United We Funk All-Stars." The project's self-titled album was released in 1997 on the Interscope label.
Former Kinsman Dazz members Michael Calhoun and Raymon W. Phillips submitted an application to register the Kinsman Dazz trademark in November 2012. In 1981, Calhoun was expelled from the group. The United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board approved Harris' request to cancel the Kinsman Dazz mark in August 2015 after Harris submitted a petition to do so in April 2015.
