Bonnie Lynn Raitt (née Bonann) is an American blues singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and political activist. She was born on November 8, 1949, in Chatsworth, New Jersey. Raitt began playing guitar at an early age and her father, Broadway musical star John Raitt, taught her several chords. She soon began performing publicly in coffeehouses throughout the Boston area. In 1971, she released her debut album Bonnie Raitt, which reached the top ten on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The following year, she released her second album Give It Up, which peaked at number seventeen on the Billboard 200. Raitt's success continued with her next two albums, Streetlights (1974) and Home Plate (1975), which both reached the top twenty on the Billboard 200. In 1977, she released Sweet Forgiveness, which became her first album to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The album also spawned Raitt's first top forty single, "Runaway." She released her fourth album, Green Light, in 1982. The album reached the top thirty on the Billboard 200 and spawned two top forty singles, "Something to Talk About" and "I Can't Make You Love Me." Raitt's fifth album, Nine Lives (1986), was her first to be certified platinum by the RIAA. The album featured the hit single "Nick of Time," which won Raitt a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She followed up with the albums Luck of the Draw (1991) and Longing in Their Hearts (1994), which were both certified double platinum by the RIAA. In 2000, Raitt released the album Silver Lining, which was her first album in six years. The album peaked at number fourteen on the Billboard 200 and spawned the hit single "I Can't Help You Now." She has won ten Grammy Awards throughout her career. She has also been nominated for five Academy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards.
In addition to bonnie raitt music, she is also an active political activist. She has campaigned for various causes such as environmentalism, Native American rights, and same-sex marriage. Raitt was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Bonnie Raitt takes listeners on an exciting journey through her twenty-first album, "Just Like That…", where she blends all the inspirations that have driven her iconic career while drawing attention to today’s unique challenges. “I'm especially passionate about the guitar songs of Bonnie Raitt and John Prine, but I still have immense admiration for Dylan, Jackson Browne, and Paul Brady," she passionately shares. She strived to stay actively engaged in online fundraising efforts that focused on the election, social justice, and environmental initiatives despite the pandemic. The California Honeydrops graced the stage and exceeded everyone's expectations.
One of the most astonishing moments at the 2023 Grammys was the announcement of Bonnie Raitt as the recipient of the esteemed Song of the Year award for her remarkable masterpiece "Just Like That." Despite many who expected smash hits by artists like Adele, Harry Styles, and Lizzo to win, Raitt's award is well-deserved and few would argue otherwise. This holds particularly true when one recognizes the immense significance Raitt has held in the realm of popular music for countless decades. However, that was not the sole general field accolade she has earned. At the 32nd Grammy Awards in 1990, Raitt's triumphant return with "Nick of Time" earned her three prestigious awards, including Album of the Year, triumphing over music legends such as Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Don Henley.
