About Angie Stone

Angela Laverne Brown known professionally as Angie Stone, is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone began her career in the mid-1990s as part of the R&B group The Sequence. She went on to have a solo career with several hit singles, including "No More Rain (In This Cloud)," "Wish I Didn't Miss You," and "Brotha." Stone has released five studio albums, including two consecutive Grammy Award–nominated albums. She has sold over twelve million records worldwide and has earned eight top ten singles on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Stone was born in Columbia, South Carolina, where she began singing gospel music at First Nazareth Baptist Church at the age of four. Her father, a reverend, was a member of the local gospel quartet The Fountainheads. As a teenager, Stone sang back-up vocals for local R&B groups including The Main Ingredient and Tru Blu. She also appeared onpublic television's singer/songwriter series It's Showtime at the Apollo in 1991. In the mid-1990s, Stone formed the R&B group The Sequence, who had a hit in 1980 with "Funk You Up." The Sequence was the first female rap act to ever be signed to a major label (Sugar Hill Records). Stone's solo career began in 1999 with the release of her debut album Black Diamond on Arista Records. The album featured the single "No More Rain (In This Cloud)," which peaked at number eight on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number five on the UK Singles Chart. Stone's second album, Mahogany Soul, was released in 2001 on J Records. The album's first single, "Wish I Didn't Miss You," peaked at number four on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number eleven on the UK Singles Chart. "Brotha," featuring rappers Eric Benét and Slick Rick, was also released as a single from the album and reached number thirteen on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In 2003, Stone released her third album, Stone Hits: The Very Best of Angie Stone, which peaked at number two on the US BillboardTop R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number fourteen on the UK Albums Chart. The album's lead single, "I Wanna Thank Ya," featuring Snoop Dogg, reached number eighteen on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Stone's fourth album, The Art of Love & War, was released in 2007 on Stax Records. The album's first single, "Baby," peaked at number twenty-three on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. "Tell Me," featuring Dwele, was also released as a single from the album and reached number sixty-four on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In 2009, Stone released her fifth album, Unexpected, on Malaco Records. The album's first single, "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!," peaked at number sixty-seven on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Stone has appeared in a number of films and television shows, including Scary Movie 3 (2003), Idlewild (2006), and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2009). Stone is a three-time Grammy Award–nominated singer-songwriter. She has won two American Music Awards, and has been nominated for five BET Awards and six Soul Train Music Awards.
