Masta Ace was born Duval Clear in Brooklyn, New York, in 1966. He started rapping in the late 1980s. He got better at writing lyrics while studying media arts, thanks to KRS-One and Rakim. His early work with Juice Crew and his first album, Take a Look Around (1990), made him known as a hip-hop storyteller with a lot of thought. His unique style and lyrics that told stories quickly made him famous in the underground and set him up for a long career.
Sittin' on Chrome, a concept album by Masta Ace that came out in 1995, included the hits "Born to Roll" and "The I.N.C. Ride." It reached the Billboard charts and set the standard for 90s hip-hop style. He went on a lot of tours in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and played at festivals like Rock the Bells and A3C. His collaborations with artists like Eminem and Inspectah Deck made him more powerful, and his many nominations at the Source Awards cemented his place as a hip-hop pioneer.
Masta Ace is still on tour in 2024, playing old hits and new songs like "Beautiful" and "Rise Up."
