SWV is an American R&B vocal trio from New York City made up of Cheryl (Coko) Gamble, Tamara (Taj) Johnson, and Leanne (Lelee) Lyons. Formed in 1986 as a gospel music group, SWV became one of the most successful R&B groups of the 1990s. They had a series of hits, including "Weak," "Right Here/Human Nature," "I'm So into You," and "You're the One." The group disbanded in 1998 but reunited in 2005.
SWV was founded by Leanne "Lelee" Lyons, Tamara "Taj" Johnson, and Cheryl "Coko" Gamble (with Lelee and Coko as founding members). The band's manager at the time, Maureen Singleton, sent out cassettes of their demo along with bottles of Perrier (since, according to Taj, they couldn't afford champagne) to capture the attention of record company executives across America. SWV was given the opportunity to perform live in front of RCA executives in 1991, and they later signed them to an eight-album record deal.
Their first album, It's About Time, was released on October 27, 1992. The album sold more than a million copies and was certified platinum by the RIAA for shipments of two million copies in the United States. It included the hits "Right Here" and "I'm So into You", which were both Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number six and number 11, respectively. The album also featured the ballad "Weak", which was a huge success.
The song spent seven weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B charts and became one of the most successful R&B singles of all time, selling over two million copies. The album's third single, "You're the One", peaked at number 54 on the Hot 100 and number 24 on the R&B chart. SWV appeared on the soundtrack to the film White Men Can't Jump, which was released on October 9, 1992. The single "Right Here" was included on the soundtrack and peaked at number six on the Hot 100 and number four on the R&B chart.
