Henry Rollins is an American actor, comedian, writer, television and radio host, and musician. He first came to public attention as the frontman of the hardcore punk band Black Flag in the early 1980s, and has since hosted numerous radio shows, such as "Hotspot" on KCRW, and hosted his own TV show on IFC, "The Henry Rollins Show". He has also appeared in numerous films, such as "Heat" (1995), "Lost Highway" (1997), and "Jack Frost" (1998). Rollins has written several books, including an autobiography, Get in the Van (1994), and an essay collection, My Rules (2001).
Rollins was born in Washington, D.C., on February 13, 1961, the only child of Iris (née Burtnik) and Paul Garfield. His father worked as an engineer for the United States government while his mother was a clerical worker. As a child, Rollins was interested in music, and he began playing the drums when he was 10 years old. He also enjoyed reading and writing, and was a fan of the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien and H. P. Lovecraft. When he was 12 years old, his parents divorced, and he was raised by his mother in rural Maryland. Rollins attended American University in Washington, D.C., from 1979 to 1980, where he studied liberal arts and philosophy. He then enrolled at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he studied photography and filmmaking. He began working as a DJ at a local radio station in 1982.
