Modern English is an English new wave/post-punk band formed in 1979 in Colchester, Essex, England. Led by Robbie Grey Modern English (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar), Mick Conroy (bass), and Stephen Walker (drums), the group quickly gained notoriety for their unique blend of punk-infused rock and catchy hooks. With the release of their debut album Mesh & Lace in 1981, Modern English achieved commercial success with the single "I Melt with You" which reached #2 on the UK Singles Chart. The Modern English band followed up with a second album After the Snow in 1982 which featured the hit single "Hands Across the Sea". In 1983, Modern English released Ricochet Days which included two top 20 singles – "Life In The Gladhouse" and "I'll Stop The World And Melt With You". The band's fourth studio album Stop-Start was released in 1985 and produced four singles including "Ink And Paper". Despite its success, this would be the last Modern English albums from Modern English before they disbanded in 1987. However, they reformed two years later to record Pillow Lips which spawned two more top 40 hits – "Rainbows End" and "Someone's Calling". This was followed by their sixth studio album Gathering Dust released in 1990. After this release, Modern English disbanded again in 1991 only to reunite once more for a 2023 tour! Modern English has been nominated for multiple awards including Best British Newcomer at the 1982 Brit Awards as well as Best Single at the 1983 Brit Awards for their song “I Melt With You”. They have also been credited with influencing many other bands such as U2, Suede, and Blur who cite them as a major influence on their sound.
