Idles are a British rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. The band's debut album, Brutalism, was released in 2017 to critical acclaim. DIY magazine, gave it 4 stars, calling it "a searing and deeply humanist record that's as angry as it is compassionate." The Line of Best Fit gave the album a perfect score, describing it as "as near to perfection as an album can be." In 2018, Idles won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Album. Joe Talbot, frontman of the band, expresses that they strive to ensure people who have experienced trauma or heartbreak feel comforted and know that it is possible to reclaim joy in life. Brutalism was followed by Joy as an Act of Resistance in 2018. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize, and was named Album of the Year by NME, who said it was "a record of rare power and passion."
The band was up for Best Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards in 2019 and later took home the Kerrang! Best British Breakthrough Act Award. Joy as an Act of Resistance was named to the 2019 Hyundai Mercury Prize shortlist in that same year. On September 19th, the band performed Never Fight a Man with a Perm. They performed a number of gigs in the UK in December, including one at London's Alexandra Palace that was attended by 10,000 people. The band's third album, Ultra Mono, was released in 2020 to further critical acclaim. In a five-star review, The Guardian called it "a joyous, life-affirming record that manages to be both radical and pop." Idles are known for their political lyrics and their DIY ethic. The band has been outspoken about mental health, feminism, and working-class issues. In 2020, the band launched a campaign to raise money for food banks in the UK.
