The Marías are an American indie pop band from Los Angeles, California. The band consists of sisters María and Luisa Fernanda Reyes, who were born in Phoenix, Arizona and raised in Durango, Mexico. The band is named after their mother, Maynard Reyes.
The Marías began making music together in 2014, when they released their debut single "Chasing Ghosts". They gained attention with the release of their single "Cariño" in 2016. The band has released two EPs, Superclean, Vol. I (2017) and Superclean, Vol. II (2018). They are currently signed to the record label Double Denim Records.
The Marías have been described as "a blend of '60s surf pop, doo-wop, and contemporary R&B." Their music has been compared to that of Beach House, Broadcast, The Ronettes, and Lana Del Rey.
The band has toured with Phoenix, The Growlers, Foxygen, and Allah-Las. They have also performed at festivals such as South by Southwest, Coachella, and Lollapalooza.
According to Mara Zardoya, her influences include the late Tejano singer Selena, Norah Jones, Sade, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Carla Morrison, Julieta Venegas, and Erykah Badu, as well as the director Pedro Almodóvar. In contrast, Conway cites Tame Impala, Radiohead, D'Angelo, and The Strokes as influences.
Zardoya claimed that despite Conway's ignorance of her Spanish heritage, the band was open to experimenting with new sounds, which eventually resulted in multiple Spanish-language tracks on all of their albums.
