The Association was formed in 1965 by Terry Kirkman, who had previously played in a band called The New Christy Minstrels. The group's first hit was "Along Comes Mary", which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966. The song was written by Tandyn Almer, who wrote several other songs for the group, including their next two hits. "Cherish" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1967, while "Windy" reached No. 1 on the Cashbox chart and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart later that year. The group's popularity began to wane in late 1967, although they continued to record and release albums throughout the 1970s. They had a minor hit in 1974 with "Dreamer", which reached No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group disbanded in 1979 but reformed in 1992 with two original members, Kirkman and Russ Giguere.
