About Stereolab

Stereolab has been a mainstay of the indie music scene for over 30 years. Formed in 1990 by Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier, the band has crafted some of the most beloved alternative rock songs of all time, blending post-punk, electronica, jazz, and other styles into a unique sound that is instantly recognizable as Stereolab. Throughout their career, they have released ten studio albums and have toured extensively throughout Europe and North America.
Their first album “Peng” was released in 1992 to critical acclaim and established them as one of the most innovative bands of their generation. This was followed up by four more critically acclaimed albums before the band took a break from recording in 2003. During this period they continued to tour regularly, playing festivals across the world and headlining their own shows. In 2006, they returned with the release of “Fab Four Suture” which spawned one of their biggest hits “Miss Modular”.

The following year saw the release of three albums; two originals and an album featuring covers from some of Stereolab’s peers including The Who, Yo La Tengo, and Television Personalities amongst others. Up until this point Stereolab had been quite prolific but had struggled to find mainstream success outside of some college radio airplay. However, 2010 saw them signing with long-time collaborators 4AD records who gave them wider exposure than ever before through TV appearances and radio play. The same year also saw them releasing “Not Music” which can be seen as a return to form after a five-year hiatus from recording original material. After another short break, they returned in 2014 with what would prove to be their final album “The Groop Played Space Age Bachelor Pad Music” –a delightful blend of trip-hop beats, baroque synth sounds, and acid jazz horns that signified a shift in style from their early days but still retained that classic Stereolab essence that so many fans adore.

Despite announcing an indefinite hiatus after this album there remain hopes that one day we might see a return from Tim Gane & Co., whose immense contribution to indie music over the last 30 years will never be forgotten or replaced. Stereolab has been widely praised for its avant-garde music and innovative sound, garnering a number of accolades over its 30-year career. In 2003 they were inducted into the Independent Music Hall of Fame to acknowledge their contribution to the genre. Additionally, they have also been nominated for multiple Grammy awards and in 2008 won the UK’s prestigious Mercury Prize for best album with “Chemical Chords”. Stereolabs’ constant experimentation with different styles throughout their career has seen them cited as one of the most influential bands of the last decade by critics worldwide.
