Smith & Thell are a pop/folk band from Stockholm, Sweden. The group consists of Maria Jane Smith and Johanna Thell.
The band was formed in 2013, when the two singers met at a songwriting camp in the Swedish town of Vimmerby. The pair began writing songs together and soon caught the attention of Universal Music Sweden. In 2014, they released their debut single, "Killin' Me Softly," which became a top 10 hit in Sweden.
The band's debut album, Souvenir, was released in 2016 and peaked at number two on the Swedish charts. The album included the singles "Forgive Me Friend" and "Statues."
In 2018, Smith & Thell won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Smith & Thell write deeply felt songs about love, hope, and grief as well as passion and exhilaration that are based on personal experience.
In his own words, Smith said, "We don't work toward making albums with one specific sound; it's song-by-song written on the way while we live...these last years have been a rollercoaster of emotions: we lost a loved family member way too young, we transitioned from being a couple to continuing the band as friends, our career took off for real, we toured the world, to name a few things.
