Josiah Wise known professionally as serpentwithfeet, is an experimental musician based in Brooklyn, New York City. His music consists of R&B, gospel, and electronic influences.
Wise began his musical journey at the age of five in the Baltimore church his family belonged to. There, he learned to sing and play piano. He later attended the Peabody Institute, where he studied classical composition. After college, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music.
In 2016, serpentwithfeet released his debut EP, blisters, to critical acclaim. The EP was produced by experimental musician PC Music founder A. G. Cook. It featured the single "flickering", which was named one of the best songs of 2016 by Pitchfork.
In 2018, serpentwithfeet released his debut album, soil. The album was produced by Hudson Mohawke and featured the singles "bless ur heart" and "muck". It received widespread critical acclaim, with Pitchfork describing it as "one of the year's most stunning debuts".
In 2019, serpentwithfeet won a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for his album soil.
Wise and Adult Swim collaborated to release the single "A Comma" on March 30, 2020. He also made a Secretly Canadian announcement about his upcoming EP, Apparition.
Following "A Comma," he released the EP "Apparition" on April 29, 2020, via Secretly Canadian. This EP has three tracks, including "A Comma," "This Hill," and "Psychic," his single.
He appeared in the song "Delicate Limbs" by Virgil Abloh on January 8, 2021.
Serpentwithfeet announced the release of his second studio album, Deacon, in January 2021 and shared the lead track, "Fellowship," which was co-produced by Sampha and Lil Silva. It was made available on March 26.
