The gentle, guitar-driven tunes of indie-pop duo SALES exude a beautifully warm and nostalgic vibe. The two are natives of Orlando, Florida, and have a long history together. Their relaxed relationship can be heard in their subtle, mellow tracks. In high school Latin class, frontwoman Lauren Morgan and guitarist and electronic whiz Jordan Shih first crossed paths. They created music as teenagers and recorded it, but they eventually split up to attend college. Both tried their hand at other musical endeavors and bands, but they didn't decide to band together until they returned to Orlando after graduating from college.
At this point, SALES—the name given to the group in honor of Morgan's parents, who are both salespeople—began to take shape. The team started to develop their mesmerizing minimalist guitar-pop after drawing influences from classic rock, punk, hip-hop, and electronic music. The band's first single, "Renee," was independently released in 2013, and their debut six-song SALES EP was released the following year.
They frequently sold out gigs in the Orlando area as they developed their sound and grew in popularity in their hometown. But as they grew in popularity online as a result of mentions on prestigious sites like CMJ and Stereogum, they finally began playing out-of-state shows and hired drummer Joy Cyr (who was later replaced by Malcolm Martin in 2017) to round out their live arrangement.
SALES ultimately released its debut full-length album, SALES LP, in April 2016 after releasing a number of further singles. They started a protracted North American tour in support of the album. Two years later, they released their sophomore album, forever & ever, and embarked on another U.S. tour with it. They have maintained their independence throughout it all, self-releasing each and every one of their records while they continue to win over new admirers both online and in person.
