Oliver Tree Nickell (born June 29, 1993) is an American singer, record producer, and comedian hailing from Santa Cruz, California. At the young age of three, he began learning piano and quickly moved to songwriting. By six years old, he already had a full album composed. Tree dedicated two years of study to business at San Francisco State University. In 2010, Oliver officially began his journey into music with the debut of his solo project titled "Tree". By that point, he had presented for renowned acts like Skrillex and Zeds Dead. At first, he independently released his music but then partnered with R&S Records in 2011. When Tree was 18, he made the bold move to join London's prestigious R&S Records and released his groundbreaking debut EP, Demons. After receiving the stamp of approval from Radiohead's frontman Thom Yorke for his version of "Karma Police", The EP swiftly gained recognition.
With newfound determination, the tree decided to take a break from his music career and returned to school at the California Institute of the Arts where he further developed his musical knowledge by studying music technology. He then gained popularity on Vine in 2013, where he would often post short comedic videos. In 2016, he began pursuing a music career and released his debut EP, Cheers, in 2017. His unique blend of alternative rock, hip-hop, and electronic music has led to him being compared to the likes of Beck and Childish Gambino. The Oliver Tree concerts have been fans' favorite and have toured with the likes of Tyler, The Creator, and Mac DeMarco, and have also performed at festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo. In 2019, he released his first full-length album, "Ugly is Beautiful" which peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Alternative Albums chart.
Oliver Tree is known for his eccentric fashion sense and often outrageous hairstyles. He has been described as "one of the most visually distinctive artists in music today." On January 12, 2022, Tree released the lead single "Cowboys Don't Cry" from his second album of the same name. The album was released on April 9, 2022. It includes the previously released single "Hurt" as well as collaborations with artists such as G-Eazy, Ty Dolla $ign, Max Frost, and Machine Gun Kelly. Tree has also embarked on a tour in support of the album, which began in June 2022. Last August 23rd of that year, he was featured in a performance alongside Jack Johnson and Kygo at the MTV Video Music Awards. With the release of Cowboy Tears, Oliver Tree has solidified his place as a true musical pioneer and one of the most innovative artists in the industry today.
