Ari Staprans Leff known professionally as Lauv, is an American singer and musician, best known for his breakout hit "I Like Me Better" in 2017. He focused on writing and producing for other artists during college. In 2016, he released his first EP, Lost in the Light. The following year, he rose to prominence with "I Like Me Better", which was certified platinum in several countries and peaked within the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. He has since released several more singles, including "The Other," "Paranoid," and "I'm So Tired." He was born in San Francisco, California on August 8, 1994, the only child of Nancy and Ari Leff. He was given his middle name, Staprans, after his mother's best friend from college. Lauv's father is Latvian while his mother is of English descent. He has stated that his parents "divorced really young," and he was raised primarily by his mother. He attended the San Francisco School of the Arts as a theater major before eventually transferring to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. After crafting and producing music for other up-and-coming musicians, Leff decided to return to creating his own music in 2014. Lauv began his musical career writing songs for other artists. In 2015, he co-wrote "No Way" for Justin Bieber's album Purpose. He also wrote and produced tracks for 5 Seconds of Summer, Halsey, Meghan Trainor, Julia Michaels, and Charli XCX. In 2016, he released his first EP, Lost in the Light. The five-song EP included the singles "The Other" and "Paranoid." Lauv's breakthrough came in 2017 with the release of his single "I Like Me Better." The song peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum in Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United States. He has since released several more singles, including "The Other," "Paranoid," and "I'm So Tired..." Lauv's debut album, ~how i'm feeling~, was released on March 6, 2020.
