Jordan Rudess is a keyboardist best known as a member of the progressive metal/rock band Dream Theater. Rudess was voted "Best Overall Keyboardist" in the 2005-2009 and 2010 readers' polls of the British magazine Keyboard. In 2011, he was named "Best Keyboardist" in the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards. Jordan Rudess was born on November 4, 1956, in New York City, to a musical family. His father, Ira Rudess, was a jazz pianist and his mother Bunny (née Goodman) played piano and organ. He began playing piano at age five, and soon afterward showed an interest in synthesizers. At age nine he started studying classical piano, and by age twelve he had composed his first classical piece, "The Quest". Rudess studied music at the Juilliard School, where he was a student of Nadia Boulanger and Paul Dessau. He was a member of the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra and played chamber music.
