About Johnny Mathis

John Royce Mathis is an American singer of popular music. He recorded for the Columbia and Epic record labels between 1956 and 1988, and again since 1997. He has sold more than 350 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. His awards include five Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, an Emmy Award, two Golden Globes, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Mathis was born in Gilmer, Texas, on September 30, 1935, the fourth of seven children of Clem Mathis and Mildred Boyd. The family moved to San Francisco, California, settling on 32nd Avenue in the Richmond District, where he grew up. In 1951, Mathis began singing with a local gospel group called the Qiuntonettes when he was just sixteen years old. He credited much of his early success to their inspiration and guidance, saying "If it hadn't been for them, I wouldn't be here today." In 1954, he made his first recordings with Sierra Records. That same year, he enrolled at San Francisco State University on a Johnny Mathis music scholarship but left after just one semester to pursue his musical career full-time. By 1955, Mathis had released several singles and an album for the Sierra label. He then signed with Mercury Records and released his first single for the label, "Wonderful! Wonderful!", in 1956. The song reached number 23 on Billboard's pop chart and helped Mathis gain national exposure. Mathis continued to record for Mercury throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, scoring several hits including "It's Not for Me to Say" (1957), "Wild Is the Wind" (1958), and "The Twelfth of Never" (1963). He also began working in television and film, appearing as himself in the 1957 movie Kiss Them for Me and singing the title song in 1958's Bells Are Ringing. In 2003, Mathis received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The National Trustees of the Music Academy have decided to award this Special Merit Award to artists who have made remarkable artistic contributions to the recording industry during their careers. Along with Nat King Cole, Shirley Jones, Linda Ronstadt, and Nat King Cole, Mathis was inducted into the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame on June 21, 2014. According to their website, the Hall of Fame "honors performers and composers responsible for crafting America's soundtrack" and was "conceived as an enduring tribute to the Great American Songbook." 67 years ago, Johnny Mathis received a phone call that would forever alter his life and leave an indelible mark on the history of popular music. Mathis, a talented 19-year-old track & field star from San Francisco State College, possessed not only athletic prowess but also a passion for singing. He showcased his vocal talents in various choirs and performances across the Bay Area, where he and his family made their home. His exceptional talent in the high jump garnered him an invitation to the 1956 U.S. Olympic Trials. However, destiny took a different turn when Columbia Records contacted him that very week. This decision was influenced by George Avakian, the esteemed head of popular music at the company. seen Mathis perform live, and offered the young singer his first recording contract. This 2023, Johnny Mathis is coming to Biloxi, bringing his “Voice of Romance” tour to the Beau Rivage Theatre for a March 2023 performance. He mentioned that during his early days as a singer, he primarily pursued jazz. This inclination towards jazz was also reflected in his first album for Columbia, which unfortunately did not achieve notable sales. "I traveled to New York and collaborated with some of the world's most renowned jazz musicians to create the album, but unfortunately, it didn't gain the recognition it deserved." However, when (Columbia's vice president) Mitch Miller heard the album, he approached me and expressed his disdain for the song I was singing. Mathis chuckled as he recounted the encounter. He then introduced me to Ray Coniff and Percy Faith, renowned for their expertise in popular music. Don’t miss out on this world tour and track your favorite artists! Buy Johnny Mathis tickets now!
