Mathis continued to record for Mercury throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, scoring several hits including "It's Not for Me to Say" (1957), "Wild Is the Wind" (1958), and "The Twelfth of Never" (1963). He also began working in television and film, appearing as himself in the 1957 movie Kiss Them for Me and singing the title song in 1958's Bells Are Ringing. In 2003, Mathis received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The National Trustees of the Music Academy have decided to award this Special Merit Award to artists who have made remarkable artistic contributions to the recording industry during their careers. Along with Nat King Cole, Shirley Jones, Linda Ronstadt, and Nat King Cole, Mathis was inducted into the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame on June 21, 2014.
