About Jim Brickman

James Merrill Brickman is an American pop songwriter, pianist and radio host. As a solo artist, he has released twenty albums and his songs have been recorded by artists including Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Olivia Newton-John, Liza Minnelli, Amy Grant, and Michael Bolton. He is the founder of The Music Initiative, a non-profit music education organization that provides musical instruments and instruction to underserved children and schools.

Brickman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Shirley, a homemaker, and Joseph Brickman, an insurance salesman. He has two older sisters, Mindy and Marci. Brickman's paternal grandfather was from Russia and his maternal grandparents were from England; both of his parents are Jewish. Brickman was raised in the suburban Detroit area of Southfield, Michigan, where he attended the local Jewish Community Center. He began playing piano at age six and by thirteen he was giving concerts in his parents' living room for an audience of family and friends.

Brickman graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in communications. After college, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He worked as a session musician and songwriter, and eventually signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music.

Brickman's breakthrough came in 1994 with the release of his album Picture This. The album's first single, "Valentine," was a top-five Adult Contemporary hit in the United States. The album went on to sell more than two million copies worldwide.

Brickman has continued to release albums throughout his career, including Destiny (1995), By Heart (1997), The Gift (2002), and Simple Things (2005). He has also released several holiday-themed albums, such as The Christmas Wish (1998) and A Mother's Prayer (2005). In addition to his work as a solo artist, Brickman has also written or co-written songs for other artists, including Barbra Streisand, Olivia Newton-John, Kenny Rogers, Liza Minnelli, Amy Grant, Michael Bolton, and Leann Rimes.

Brickman is also the host of a syndicated radio show called The Jim Brickman Show, which airs on Adult Contemporary and Smooth Jazz radio stations across the United States. The show features music and interviews with celebrity guests.

In 2010, Brickman founded The Music Initiative, a non-profit organization that provides musical instruments and instruction to underserved children and schools. The organization has provided instruments and lessons to more than 50,000 kids in the United States and Canada.
