Jann Arden was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on March 27, 1962. Her father, John Thomas Arden, was an insurance salesman, and her mother, Joan Margaret Yvonne (née Beadman), was a homemaker. She has two older brothers: Mike and Tony. Arden's parents divorced when she was four years old, and she was raised by her mother. As a child, Arden struggled with polio. She has described herself as "a little bit of a tomboy" growing up. When she was eight years old, her mother married Bob McAuley, and the family moved to Red Deer, Alberta. Arden played piano and alto saxophone in her high school band, and she was a member of the drama club. After graduating from high school, she attended Red Deer College, where she studied to be a veterinarian. In the early 1980s, Arden moved to Toronto, Ontario, to pursue a career in music. She worked as a waitress and as a backup singer for Canadian rocker Bryan Adams. She also performed in clubs and bars around the city. In 1985, Arden released her first single, "I Would Die for You." The song received moderate airplay on radio stations in Canada. In 1987, Arden released her self-titled debut album. The album's first single, "Could I Be Your Girl," became a top 40 hit in Canada. The album's second single, "Invisible Girl," was also successful, reaching the top 20 on the Canadian radio charts. In 1988, Arden released her second album, Living Under June. The album's lead single, "Good Mother," was a top 10 hit in Canada. The album also included the singles "Insensitive" and "Will You Remember Me." In 1989, Arden released her third album, Time for Mercy. The album's lead single, "Chains," was a top 40 hit in Canada. The album also included the singles "I'll Be There" and "Unloved." In 1992, Arden released her fourth album, Happy?. The album's lead single, "Insensitive," was a worldwide hit, reaching the top 10 in several countries, including Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
