James Blunt was born in 1972 in Tidworth, Wiltshire, England, into a military family. He was educated at Elstree School in Woolhampton, Berkshire and Harrow School, where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps. He went on to study aerospace manufacturing engineering at Bristol Polytechnic (now the University of the West of England). Blunt's father, Colonel Jim Blount, was a helicopter pilot for the Army Air Corps and his mother, Jane, was a schoolteacher. His paternal grandfather, Major Geoffrey Frederick Blount, fought during World War II as a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, while his maternal grandfather, Edward Fisher, was also a pilot in the Royal Navy. Blunt's first experience of music was listening to his father play the piano at home; he later took up the instrument himself. He has two older sisters, Emily and Charlotte. When Blunt was seven years old, his father began teaching him how to play the guitar. Blunt's first band was called "Argent" and was formed with school friends while he was a pupil at Harrow School. The band played gigs in London, but they did not achieve any success. Blunt later recalled: "We were pretty awful ... I remember people booing us off stage once." After Argent broke up, Blunt joined the Household Cavalry Regiment of the British Army as a cavalry officer. He was posted to Bovington Camp in Dorset, and later served in Germany, Kosovo and Cyprus. While on duty in Kosovo, Blunt was introduced to the work of singer-songwriter Damien Rice by way of a mutual friend. His interest in music was further fuelled by his love of flying, and he began writing songs while posted to an Army base in Germany. Blunt's musical career began in earnest when he signed a publishing deal with EMI Music Publishing in 2002. The same year, he met producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Foo Fighters) through mutual friend, singer-songwriter Sasha Sokolov. Rothrock helped Blunt to record a demo album, which was sent to various record labels in the UK. The album caught the attention of Nick Raphael, who signed Blunt to his label, Custard Records. Blunt's debut album, Back to Bedlam, was released in October 2004. The album was a huge success, selling over 11 million copies worldwide and reaching number one in several countries, including the UK and US. The album's lead single, "You're Beautiful", was a global hit, reaching number one in 12 countries. The song's success led to Blunt being nominated for five Grammy Awards, of which he won two. Blunt's second album, All the Lost Souls, was released in September 2007. The album was another commercial success, reaching number one in 12 countries and selling over five million copies worldwide. Blunt has since released three more albums: Some Kind of Trouble (2010), Moon Landing (2013) and The Afterlove (2017). He has also undertaken several world tours, and has performed at a number of high-profile events, including the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. Blunt is married to Sofia Wellesley, with whom he has two children. He divides his time between homes in London and Ibiza.
