About Gipsy Kings

The Gipsy Kings are a renowned musical group, based in both Arles and Montpellier in southern France, that blends flamenco, salsa, and pop elements. Although they primarily sing in the Catalan language, they also creatively incorporate Spanish words along with the local dialects from the south of their country. Even though all group members were born in France, their parents had emigrated from Spain during the tumultuous times of the 1930s Spanish Civil War--they were Gitanos, a subsidiary of the Romani people. By blending rumba flamenca - an uplifting, pop-style Gipsy Kings music inspired by traditional flamenco tunes – they have captivated international audiences. Initially, the group dubbed itself Los Reyes. The Gipsy Kings achieved widespread popularity with the release of their third album, featuring smash hits such as "Djobi Djoba", "Bamboléo" and the romantic ballad "Un Amor".

In 1989, Gipsy Kings made history by becoming one of only a few Spanish language albums to record an impressive 40 weeks on the U.S. charts. The Gipsy Kings band showcased their abilities in 1991 when they recorded "I've Got No Strings" for the Disney video and compilation album Simply Mad About the Mouse. Their cover of "Hotel California," featuring fast flamenco guitar leads and rhythmic strumming, gained particular attention years later when it was featured in the 1998 Coen Brothers' movie The Big Lebowski. In 2010, Toy Story 3 brought their rendition of the classic song "You've Got a Friend in Me" to life with an upbeat Spanish-language version titled "Hay un Amigo en Mi". This flamenco-style cover was immediately recognizable and has since become a fan favorite. The 2016 animated feature Sing highlighted the classic Spanish tune "Bamboleo" in a memorable grocery store scene. Compas, their 1997 release, features more traditional flamenco sounds.
