Diego El Cigala is a Spanish flamenco singer. He was born in Madrid in 1968, into a family of Roma (Gypsy) heritage. His great-grandfather was the famous flamenco guitarist Ramón Montoya. El Cigala began singing and playing guitar at an early age, and made his professional debut at the age of 14. He quickly became a popular figure in the Madrid flamenco scene, and went on to tour Spain and Latin America with some of the most renowned exponents of flamenco. El Cigala's first album, 'Lagrimas Negras', was released in 2003 and featured collaborations with Cuban piano legend Bebo Valdés and Argentine tango singer Diego El Cigala. The album was an instant success, and won El Cigala a Latin Grammy Award for Best Flamenco Album. El Cigala has since released a further five albums, all of which have received critical acclaim. He has also been awarded the prestigious Premio Nacional de Música in Spain, and was honoured with a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. El Cigala's music is a unique fusion of flamenco and other genres such as jazz, Latin music and even rock. He has been likened to a 'flamenco Bob Dylan', and his work has had a profound impact on the evolution of flamenco in the 21st century.
