Deniece Williams is an American singer, songwriter and record producer. Williams began her career in the early 1970s as a member of the R&B group The Pointers, before going on to have a successful solo career in the late 1970s and 1980s. Williams has won three Grammy Awards and has been nominated for eight. Williams was born in Gary, Indiana, on June 3, 1950, the third of four children of Matthew and Pauline Williams. Her father was a factory worker, and her mother was a beautician. Williams' musical talents were evident from an early age; she started singing in her church choir at the age of five. She went on to study music at Indiana University, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
