About David Essex

Actor David Essex OBE is an internationally renowned singer who was born in Plaistow, London on 23 July 1947. His father, Edward Albert Arthur Headington, was a Billingsgate fishmonger and his mother, Olive May (née Wotton), worked as a barmaid. Essex's grandfather, Thomas Wotton, was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery during World War I. Essex was evacuated to Northamptonshire during the Bombing of London in 1940. He attended Chalk Farm Secondary Modern School and then left school to work at an advertising company. In 1963, he appeared in an episode of the British medical drama Emergency-Ward 10. His stage debut came later that year in the musical Godspell in London's West End. He made his film debut in the 1966 film Every Day's a Holiday, and gained popularity with his role as rocker Vince Taylor in the 1973 movie That'll Be the Day. In 1974, Essex had his first UK top-ten single with "Gonna Make You a Star", which reached number five. The song was used as the theme tune to the ITV talent show New Faces. In 1977, Essex had his second UK top-ten single with "Rock On", which reached number two. In 1979, he starred in the film Stardust, and also released the album David Essex. The album peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart, and was certified platinum by the Britishonographic Industry (BPI). In 1980, Essex appeared in Breaking Glass.

He also released the album Forever, which peaked at number ten on the UK Albums Chart. In 1998, Essex appeared in the film My Life So Far. 

He also released the album Believe in Me, which peaked at number seven on the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold by the BPI. In 1999, Essex appeared in the film The Last September. He also released the album Voyage, which peaked at number eight on the UK Albums Chart. In 2000, Essex appeared in the film Here on Earth. He also released the album Solid Ground, which peaked at number nine on the UK Albums Chart. In 2001, Essex appeared in the film The Mummy Returns. He also released the album Express, which peaked at number ten on the UK Albums Chart and was certified silver by the BPI.
