Currents is an American progressive metal band from Los Angeles, California. The band was formed in 2015 by guitarists/vocalists Jeff Loomis and Mike Portnoy, bassist Travis Stever, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess. Since then, the group has released two studio albums: Tides of Time (2016) and The Way Forward (2018). Currents' music is characterized by its progressive metal sound that combines elements of thrash metal, traditional heavy metal, and melodic death metal. As a result, they have become one of the most popular bands in the progressive metal genre. Currents' debut album Tides of Time was released in 2016 to critical acclaim. It featured the hit singles "The Way Out" and "The Divided Mind". Both songs charted highly on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart with "The Way Out" peaking at number four and "The Divided Mind" reaching number ten. The album also earned the band their first Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.
In 2018, Currents released their sophomore effort The Way Forward which included fan favorites such as "Inertia" and "Lost". This album was met with similar success as its predecessor with both singles charting high on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart with "Inertia" reaching number five and "Lost" peaking at number seven. Since then Currents has gone on to tour extensively around the world with major acts such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Dream Theater, and Opeth among many others. They have also headlined several festivals including ProgPower USA and Graspop Metal Meeting Festival in Belgium. They announced their 2023 tour which will span across North America and Europe. Fans can expect to hear some of their biggest hits along with some new material from their upcoming third studio album which is set to be released later this year.
